Volkswagen of America launched an exciting fan experience to showcase the new ID.4 along with their presenting partnership with U.S. Soccer. Fans had the opportunity to check out the ID.4 electric vehicle and engage with a new WebAR experience at U.S. Soccer events.
Just point your phone at the new custom-wrapped ID.4 electric vehicle to bring the animated U.S. Soccer & Volkswagen AR experience to life. STN Digital and Gilt Edge Soccer Marketing brought on Groove Jones to bring the images to life in an innovative and touch-less way. The animation depicts various U.S. Soccer athletes as they hone in to score a goal or celebrate a play that paid off.
My first task for this experience was a Motion Mock-up. By creating a kinetic visual representation of the provided wireframes, I was able to allow stakeholders to view the experience as if it were complete, giving me the chance to address early feedback. The Mock-up went on to be used as a guideline for the engineers I collaborated with on this project.
One of the bridges between 2D and 3D for a Motion Designer are Video Atlases. By combining all 2D animated assets into a single video file, each with its own real-estate, we can later separate and manipulate them in 3D. This Video Atlas approach is what I use for a majority of AR Experiences that utilize 2D animation.
